When children learn that words on a page have a message, their curiosity is piqued and their brains work to decode the meaning. This is an essential early literacy skill – print awareness.
Write down the words to their favorite nursery rhyme and sing it with your child. Point to the words as you sing them. Do it again, but this time trade places and write down the words to your child’s favorite song.
Try this activity with grocery lists, picture books, and street signs for a few ideas. Soon, your child will learn that words are everywhere!
